On Sunday morning we looked at the ninth commandment in my series on the Ten Commandments in a sermon I entitled, "The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth (Exodus 20:16).

TEXTUAL IDEA:  The citizens of Israel were instructed by God not to bear false witness against one another.

SERMON IDEA:  As God’s people we should not bear false witness against one another.

I. The Explanation of the Commandment.
A. It involved the system of laws.
Deuteronomy 19:15: One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.

B. It involved the execution of justice.
Exodus 23:7: Keep yourself far from a false matter; do not kill the innocent and righteous. For I will not justify the wicked.

Deuteronomy 17:7: The hands of the witnesses shall be the first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So you shall put away the evil from among you.

C. It involved the love of others.
Leviticus 19:18: You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Deuteronomy 19:18-19: And the judges shall make careful inquiry, and indeed, if the witness is a false witness, who has testified falsely against his brother, then you shall do to him as he thought to have done to his brother; so you shall put away the evil from among you.

II. The Christ of the Commandment.
Psalm 27:12: Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence.

Matthew 26:59-60: Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward.

Mark 14:55-56: Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.

III. The Application of the Commandment.
A. Our God is a God of truth.
Romans 3:4: Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words, and may overcome when You are judged.”

John 1:14: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Titus 1:2: in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.

B. Our gospel is a gospel of truth.
Romans 1:25: who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

John 17:17: Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

James 1:18: Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

C. Our calling is a calling of truth.
2 Corinthians 12:20: For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults.

James 3:6: And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

Ephesians 4:25, 31: Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

Al Mohler: God’s people are a people of the truth. We are to honor and tell the truth, to defend and discern the truth, to love the Bible as the Word of God that is truth without any mixture of error, and to stand for the truth. We are to uphold the truth, even if the whole world disbelieves, hates, and subverts the truth. We are the people of the truth for one single and irreducible reason—our God is true.

On Sunday evening we had our yearly baptism and tailgate party in the back parking lot of our church.  I had the privilege of baptizing 13 precious people.  We had over 225 people in attendance.  Click on this link to our Facebook page to view over 200 pictures from last night.
